DIRECT SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF AMMONIA IN NATURAL WATERS BY THE PHENOL-HYPOCHLORITE REACTION.

Abstract

The phenol-hypochlorite reaction has been adapted to detect microgram quantities of ammonia natural waters. The procedure does not require that the sample be heated, be alkaline, or that the ammonia be extracted. This method estimates ammonia in waters of varying salinity to a precision of 20% at 0.3 microgram atom NH3/l. The lower limit of detection is 0.2 microgram atom NH3/l, and the analysis is suitable for use at sea. (Author)
