MAGNETIC TRANSITION METAL. RARE EARTH ALLOYS.

Abstract

The present state of the preparation of YCo5 and other RECo5 compounds by means of the amalgam process is reviewed. These compounds are interesting for powder permanent magnets. By an ultrasonic treatment of Y-Co-amalgam, followed by a heat treatment up to 1200C, finely divided YCo5 particles can be obtained, which seem to be well suited for permanent magnets. The system Nd-Mn has been investigated by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence DTA and micrographs. The intermetallic compounds Nd6Mn23 and NdMn12 are present. A schematic phase diagram is presented. Magnetic measurements on these compounds are given. Nd6Mn23 is ferromagnetic, NdMn12 seems to be antiferromagnetic at low temperatures. The system Tb-Mn has also been investigated and a schematic phase diagram is given. The compounds TbMn2, Tb6Mn23 and TbMn12 are present. Their crystal structure and lattice spacings are given. The phase diagrams of Tb-Hg and Yb-Hg have been investigated by differential thermal analysis. The schematic phase diagrams are presented. These diagrams are the basis for investigations of Tb- and Yb-alloys by means of the amalgam process. (Author)
