STRESS BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS FOR INFINITE WEDGES,

Abstract

Several aspects of the problem of the stress distribution in an infinite elastic wedge are considered. First, the Mellin transform formulation of the problem, where there is a prescribed symmetrical loading on the two faces, is carefully analyzed in terms of regularity conditions as r approaches infinity and as r approaches 0+ to determine whether the boundary-value problem is well-posed and whether the formal Mellin transform solution satisfies the desired conditions. A power series formulation of the Airy stress function in terms of residues is obtained from the inversion integral. Closed form solutions are given for the special cases of half-wedge angles of pi/2 and pi with the prescribed loading function, f(r) = e to the -rth power. (Author)
