Initial Investigation of an Inductive Coil Technique for the Determination of the Equivalent Electrical Conductivity of a Two Phase Liquid Metal Flow

Abstract

An inductive measuring technique was used in conjunction with a nonlinear, twin T type of bridge in an effort to correlate bridge output with the coil core electrical conductivity. This is envisioned as being the initial step in designing an instrument capable of detecting changes in electrical conductivity of a two phase liquid metal flow, as applied to an MHD power generation cycle. Definite measurements were achieved, but poor agreement exists between the present theory and the data obtained. The data was not definitive enough to establish any reliable calibration. Even though no two phase flow measurements were attempted, the instrument did show a potential of being used to determine the relative electrical conductivity between highly conducting materials.
