GUN LAUNCHED PROBES - PARACHUTE EXPULSION TESTS UNDER SIMULATED ENVIRONMENT,

Abstract

Experience gained during the early phases of Project Gun Probe at WSMR revealed evidence that the parachute packaging and/or expulsion techniques used at that time were unsatisfactory. Tests were planned to evaluate the technique visually, utilizing high-speed cameras and simulated environments. The 60-foot vacuum sphere at the NASA facility at Langley Research Center was made available, and six tests were successfully conducted. Results of the tests indicated that only minor modifications to the existing technique were necessary to produce a completely acceptable system. (Author)
