STUDY OF METHODS TO IMPROVE HIGH POWER KLYSTRON LIFE AND RELIABILITY.

Abstract

Studies were conducted in the following areas: Tests were conducted to measure the effects of thermal cycling and dc and ac steady-state operation upon the filament and mounting configuration of the cathode. Filament tie and focus electrode mounting were the main changes made. Studies were made to improve the ability of the windows on the present VA-876 klystron to withstand the effects of arcing in the rf waveguide of the system. The improved window consisted of various half-wave ceramic block windows. Studies were conducted to measure the feasibility of a solid-state arc protection system that would be less sensitive to extraneous line variations, and stable over a long period of time and temperature ranges. A solid-state arc detector of stable design was the result of this study. (Author)
