ON THE APPLICATION OF THE 'LAW OF PLANE SECTIONS' TO THE DETERMINATION OF THE AERODYNAMIC FORCES ACTING ON OSCILLATING SHELLS,

Abstract

Consideration is given to the oscillations of an infinitely long circular cylindrical shell which is elastic, around which occurs the potential flow of a compressible gas in the direction of the generators. It is shown that the approximate solution can be obtained from the exact one by a limiting process and so the approximate solution has an asymptotic character. In addition to the conditions for the limiting process, it is required that the condition of quasi-stationarity and a condition on the disturbances must be fulfilled. The bending of the shell and the aerodynamic disturbances are assumed small enough for linearized theory to apply. The equations to be solved are the equations of motion of the shell and the equation for the disturbance velocity potential. For an infinitely long cylinder, the exact solution is known. (Author)
