NORMATIVE ACCOUNTING THEORY AND THE THEORY OF DECISION,

Abstract

The paper discusses an approach to the construction of normative accounting theory with respect to both methodology and substance. The method of postulation and deduction is outlined, with particular emphasis on its role in the social sciences in general and in accounting in particular. It is suggested that a formal link must be established between the (normative) theory of decision and accounting, and that rigorous (economic) theories of the individual and of the firm must be developed, if necessary by accountants, before accounting theories can be built on sound foundations.
