OXIRANE-POLYESTER RESIN SYSTEM IN AIR DRYING GLOSS ENAMELS.

Abstract

A two-component oxirane-polyester resin system was evaluated for use in exterior, air drying, gloss enamels. Enamels prepared from this resin system were more resistant than current specification alkyd enamels to acids, alkali, hydraulic fluids, abrasive wear, water immersion and yellowing upon aging. They also exhibited improved gloss, appearance and hardness, but were less flexible than the alkyd enamels. After one year exposure in a temperature climate, the experimental enamels had better gloss retention; in a tropical environment they had poorer gloss retention. After two years exposure in both environments gloss retention of most of the enamels was comparable and remained so for exposure periods up to four years.
