SPIN-ORBIT MATRIX ELEMENTS,

Abstract

The spin-orbit interaction in a configuration of the form (nl)(N) is considered in detail. An explicit expression for the reduced matrix element of the interaction for Russell-Saunders ground states is obtained. Reduced matrix elements involving the ground term of the (nf)(6) configuration and excited terms to which it couples are given. A general proof is given of the known relationship between matrix elements of complementary configurations. (Author)
