EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF EFFECT OF VACUUM ON PROCESS OF CONTACT FAILURE OF STEELS (EKSPERIMENTALNOE ISSLEDOVANIE VLIYANIYA VAKUUMA A PROTSESS KONTAKTNOGO RAZRUSHENIYA STALEI),

Abstract

Investigation of properties of materials in extreme conditions is the most important problem of new technology. Study of behavior of materials with contact loading in vacuum has great practical value. Various samples of steel were tested. Two types of tests were specified. In the first case it was determined the number of cycles which the material could withstand before the appearance of catastrophic wear. In the second case testing was conducted with consecutive gradual increase of number of cycles of loading from 500 thousand to 10 million. The article gives results of the tests and conclusions regarding causes of wear, advantages of various degrees of vacuum advantages of use of various lubricants and bearings, and application of plastic films on friction surfaces.
