UNDERWATER SPEECH COMMUNICATION.

Abstract

Research in progress includes speech studies on (1) Standardization of speech materials for underwater communication research; (2) Diver to diver communication; (3) Underwater speech intelligibility as a function of distance; (4) Research on addition of a cavity to the vocal tract; (5) Research on existing mouthpieces; and (6) Research on existing microphones. Other research includes (1) Studies of speech in the helium-oxygen environment and the evaluation of helium speech unscramblers; (2) Studies in underwater auditory function, emphasizing the hearing acuity and pathology of divers.
