RELATION BETWEEN SLOPE AND RIDGE FORMS AND LITHOLOGY IN NEW GUINEA.
Abstract
In the paper it is shown that in the humid tropical mountains of New Guinea, the shapes of valley slopes are largely, though by no means totally, independent of lithology, being controlled primarily by the slope-forming processes in the area. Thus, 77.6 per cent of all slopes recorded were in the straight to nearly straight group. Ridge shapes, however, show a substantially stronger relationship to lithology with four major subsets being distinguished: mixed metamorphics; mixed sedimentaries; metasediments and acid igneous rocks; and soft sedimentaries and alluvium.
