STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND THE CONCEPT OF THE 'TALE-TYPE',

Abstract

Vladimir IA. Propp's recently discovered analysis of fairy tales caused considerable excitement among folklorists. His analysis opposes the historical-geographical method of the so-called 'Finnish school', which is still one of the leading trends in folklore scholarship. This report attempts to confront Propp's analysis with the concept of the 'tale-type' which lies at the basis of the work of the Finnish school. (Author)
