SELECTION OF AVERAGED STANDARD PICTURES,

Abstract

A theoretical study is presented of averaged standard masks for correlation-type automatic readers. Correlation coefficients can be calculated either by optical or electrical correlators. Formulas are developed for the optimum standards, which minimize the error probability, for both cases. When the total number of black elements in the standard is great, the use of the first type standard (optical) yields a much lower error probability. A 'hybrid' circuit is recommended for practical automatic readers.
