AN ANALYSIS OF JAPANESE CURRENT METER ARRAYS.
Abstract
Surveys for an oceanographic data exchange program are undertaken in the Japanese waters by the U. S. Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) and the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Forces (JMSDF). As part of this program, self-contained current meters are supplied to the Japanese. Although a brief course of instruction on the operation and maintenance of the current meters is conducted, the Japanese have the responsibility of constructing and launching the current meter arrays. A NAVOCEANO representative boarded a Japanese ship in July 1967 in response to a JMSDF invitation to observe current meter operations. This report discusses the Japanese techniques and compares them with present NAVOCEANO practices. Advantages and disadvantages of both techniques for launching, recovery, and rigging procedures are presented. (Author)
