THE THIN LAYER APPROXIMATION IN HYPERSONIC VISCOUS FLOW THEORY.
Abstract
A suggested thin layer approximation to the Navier-Stokes equations, suitable for hypersonic viscous flow over slender bodies, is solved approximately in a variety of ways for the case of flow over a flat plate at zero incidence. Two methods of solution appear to be most effective: an inner-outer representation for values of the interaction parameter v less than about 1/4; and for larger v, a linearized form of the equations in which the viscous and thermal diffusion rates correspond to the temperature at the plate surface. The result of calculations of the density field made with these two approaches are in approximate agreement with experiment over the major portion of the leading edge flow region. Greatest differences occur at the surface and in the shock region where the neglected nonlinear terms are most important. Theoretical analyses have as yet revealed no disagreement between the predictions of the thin layer hypersonic approximations and experiment--although the former are incomplete and at best approximate.
