THE MAGNITUDE OF TEMPERATURE VARIABILITY AT ONE LOCATION IN THE TONGUE OF THE OCEAN.
Abstract
Time-series temperature data have been recorded almost continuously from the AUTEC Permanent Environmental Monitoring Array located in the Tongue of the Ocean for the past two years. A fifteen day sample of this data, at 12 levels, has been taken and analyzed to determine the magnitude of variability in temperature at the various levels. Also, strong tidal influence was found and investigated. The analyses indicate that some of the resultant characteristics of the data are in good agreement with the results of similar analyses recently performed by others. Temperature structure constants indicating the magnitude of temperature variability have been determined through the use of structure functions, initially employed because of the overall nonstationary qualities of the data, and show that changes in the intensity of temperature fluctuations at the various levels are almost an order of magnitude. The results suggest that characteristic slopes derived from the structure function may more closely follow predicted values if the influence of periodic components is first removed from the data.
