ON THE ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS OF MULTI-LAYER RC DISTRIBUTED NETWORKS.

Abstract

This thesis is concerned with the study of multi-layer resistance-capacitance (RC) distributed networks. Such networks are formed by layers of dielectric material sandwiched alternately between layers of resistive material. The networks bear a resemblance to coupled RC transmission lines and can be regarded as multi-port networks. In this thesis we attempt to develop a complete theory of the multi-layer RC distributed network. The network will be described in terms of the explicit forms of the generalized ABCD (chain) matrices. Canonical expressions of the immittance and voltage transfer functions of the networks having uniform and piecewise uniform as well as certain nonuniform structures are derived. It is found that as far as the driving point immittance function is concerned, uniform RC (transmission) lines connected in series, in parallel, in cascade or the combinations can be replaced by a single multi-layer RC distributed network. The network also exhibits both the low-pass and band-pass characteristics with voltage gain greater than unity over a certain range of frequencies. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given under which a transcendental function can be realized as the network function of a multi-layer RC distributed network. Experimental results are also given to verify the theories developed in this thesis. (Author)
