COMPARISON OF STATIC AND DYNAMIC OXIDATION OF GREASE.
Abstract
Noninhibited and inhibited soap thickened greases were oxidized statically and dynamically to determine the wear-causing oxidation products formed by both methods and to determine if a standard dynamic oxidation test could be established. The effect of both types of oxidation on grease properties such as penetration, neutralization number, evaporation and lubricity were determined. The following conclusions can be drawn from the investigation: (1) Although the induction period was longer, the total amount of oxygen absorbed at the conclusion was greater for the dynamic oxidation test than for the static test. (2) Volatile and nonvolatile oxidation products were formed that affected the lubricity of the grease. (3) The lubricity properties of the dynamically oxidized greases were less affected even though they were oxidized to a greater extent than in the static test. This indicates the possibility that the mechanism of oxidation is different for the two types of tests. (4) Metallic particles introduced into the grease during dynamic oxidation may account for the difference in the oxidation mechanism. (5) Further work should be done to determine the difference in the oxidation mechanism. (Author)
