LOW MAGNETIC SATURATION GARNETS.

Abstract

Methods were derived for reproducible synthesis of both mono- and polycrystalline Y and BiCaV type garnets with 4(pi)Ms in the 100 to 900 gauss range. A full characterization of the magnetic and microwave properties of these newly developed compositions, indicates promise for use in microwave circulator and phaser applications. It was found that some of the new compositions offer the following advantages over standard YIG type materials: (1) lower material cost for the BiCaVIG type compositions, (2) improved compositional stability and anisotropy fields (as low as 16 oersteds) for Ga substituted YCaVIG single crystals, (3) improved temperature stability of 4(pi)Ms and linewidth, and lower magnetostriction effects in polycrystalline compositions, (4) uniquely low polycrystalline linewidths down to -60C at L band for In substituted YCaVIG. Preliminary tests of the newly developed materials in an L band microstrip circulator and S band high power digital phase shifter is described. A thorough evaluation of selected compositions was made in a below resonance Y-junction circulator operating in the 2.0 GHz range. (Author)
