STABILITY OF A HINGE-SUPPORTED RECTANGULAR PLATE LOADED IN ITS PLANE WITH A LOCAL LOAD (STIIKIST SHARNIRNO OPEROII PRYAMOKUTNOII PLASTYNKY PID LOKALNYM NAVANTZAHENNYAM),

Abstract

The buckling of a rectangular plate by a local load acting in the plane of the plate is analyzed. A load uniformly distributed along a small, but finite section of the edge is used instead of a concentrated load. The problem is treated as a linear one, and two methods are used in determining the buckling load which depends on the value of a buckling coefficient K: (1) integration of the partial differential equation (which describes the shape of the elastic surface at the instant of buckling) by a finite-difference method; and (2) the energy method. The values determined by method (1) are lower than the exact values, and the values determined by method (2) are higher than the exact values. The maximum difference between them is less than 2%. Results of calculating a numerical example (carried out on the 'Kiev' electronic computer) by both methods are given in tables. (Author)
