DYNAMIC STRAIN CONCENTRATION FACTOR FOR A NOTCH,

Abstract

Annealed aluminum rods containing a circumferential notch were subjected to several impact loads. For each impact, the strain histories of the respective strain gauges were recorded on an oscilloscope. From the strain history data concentration factors were computed for the material response in both the elastic and plastic region. The concentration factors, as functions of time, were averaged for each level of impact and then compared with the static elastic concentration factor. Two general conclusions are made from the averaged time history curves for each impact level. First, the dynamic concentration factor is equal to the static concentration factor in the elastic range of the material response. Secondly, for the plastic range of material response in the notch, the average dynamic concentration factor is greater than the static elastic value. The ratio of the plastic response to the elastic value depends on the magnitude of the impact loading and the amount of previous plastic deformation that the notch had undergone. (Author)
