STUDIES OF SPATIAL IRREGULARITIES IN THE IONOSPHERE AND THEIR VARIATIONS WITH TIME.

Abstract

The AFCRL airborne ionosonde program, and the completion of development and construction of equipment for the production of oblique-path ionograms for studying travelling ionospheric disturbances. This equipment was installed and operated in a three-station network based at Hanover, N.H., and the analysis of observations made with the network is described in a graduate student thesis which is incorporated here-in by reference. A comparison of the observations with simultaneous observations on a three-frequency, PPI display, backscatter sounder, also located at Hanover, N.H., is described in a second graduate student thesis which is also incorporated here-in by reference. The development of a new vertical-incidence, sweep-frequency ionosonde capable of continuous, unattended operation is described. (Author)
