NUTRITION AND COURSE OF SPERMATOGENESIS IN MALE IXODID TICKS.

Abstract

Peculiarities of nutrition and its influence on spermatogenesis in Ixodes ricinus L., Hyalomma plumbeum Panz., Rhipicephalus turanicus B. Pom., Dermacentor pictus Herm., and Haemaphysalis punctata Can. and Fanz., are described. Hungry ticks were placed on the back of rabbits under a capsule, and removed after a fixed period of bloodsucking. To test the fertilization capacity of male ticks, males were placed in test tubes with hungry or engorged unfertilized female ticks and kept at 25C. After 24 hours, the female tick was dissected and fertilization was judged by the presence or absence of spermatozoa in the secretory ducts of the genital system. (Author)
