A CASE OF COLLECTING AMBLYOMMA LEPIDUM DONITZ, 1909, TICK IN AZERBAIJAN,

Abstract

On 18 May 1954, in Lenkoran region of Azerbaijan S.S.R., a European Stone Curlew (Burkinus aedicnemus L.) was shot. A male Amblyomma lepidum Donitz, 1909 tick was found attached to the head. The distribution area of A. lepidum (eastern equatorial Africa from Sudan to Zanzibar) corresponds to overwintering regions of Burhinus oedicnemus L. in Africa, Asia Minor, South Arabia, and Iran; therefore finding of this tick species in Azerbaijan S.S.R. in spring may probably be explained by accidental introduction of the tick by a passing bird. Examples of such distant introduction of ixodid ticks by birds are extremely rare. The tick is in the collection at the Zoological Institute of Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan S.S.R.
