ON THE FORMED ELEMENTS OF THE HEMOLYMPH OF TICKS OF THE FAMILY ARGASIDAE,

Abstract

The hemolymph of five tick species of the family Argasidae was studied: Ornithodorus lahorensis, O. papillipes, O. moubata, O. coniceps and Argas persicus, and one species of the family Ixodidae: Hyalomma asiaticum. Three types of cells were found in the hemolymph of ticks: (a) proleukocytes - minute cells (5-7.6 microns in diameter) with a large nucleus and an insignificant quantity of the protoplasm; (b) basophilous hemocytes - oval cells (10-20 microns) with the basophilous protoplasm and large spheroid inclusions containing glycogen; (c) eosinophilous hemocytes - amoeboid cells (12-25 microns) with acidophilous spheroid inclusions in the cytoplasm. Aside from these principal forms of cells there are many transitional ones formed from the proleukocytes. All these cells (excluding proleukocytes) are able to produce phagocytosis. Hemolymph of different Argasid-species differs insignificantly in the form and size of the cells but it is different in its biochemical and immunological properties. (Author)
