FINDING OF ARGAS PERSICUS (IXODOIDEA: ARGASIDAE) TICKS IN THE TERRITORY OF MOLDAVIAN SSR,
Abstract
Ticks were found in wall fissures in poultry raising farm in a kolkhoz located in Tirashpol village not far from Chadyr-Lunga town. This was the first finding of this tick species in the territory of the republic. The Persian Argas persicus ticks are specific parasites of birds. They inhabit aviaries as well as any places used by birds for shelter during the night (cattle barns, sheds, open biotopes, under tree bark etc.). The ticks also enter dwellings where they attack man. The epidemiological significance of these ticks as reservoirs of agents of many diseases is great and the fact of their occurrence in the territory of Moldavian SSR deserves the special attention of epidemiologists and parasitologists.
