THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ANIMAL MIGRATION IN THE SPREAD OF DISEASE,

Abstract

One of the biological conditions assisting wide distribution, development, and course of epizootics is animal mobility and ability to make spontaneous local movements and natural migrations. This conclusion is of great practical importance during epidemiological evaluation of diseases. In view of the similar biological property peculiar to the biology of many animal species, and the ability of these species to transport parasites and infectious sources, it is concluded, that the problem of any enzootic disease cannot be regarded so that an enzootic cannot occur in a locality where it is now absent. On the contrary, accumulated facts show that a new focus can arise wherever an animal species or specific or potential bloodsucking vectors are present, or on accidental introduction of an infectious source (infections and invasions) from other, animals or from man.
