THE EXCRETION PROCESSES AND FUNCTION OF MALPIGHIAN TUBULES OF IXODID TICKS,

Abstract

Discharge products of ixodid ticks including typical excrement, which is guanine, also consist of hematin and undigested blood discharged into the rectal sac. Malpighian tubules do not take an active part in water and salt elimination. Their basic function is discharge of the final product of nitrogenous metabolism, guanine. Distinct division of Malpighian tubule activity cycles into periods of accumulation of excrement in them--'charging' and 'discharging'--is lacking in ixodid ticks. During starvation at the end of bloodsucking and after detachment, guanine accumulation in the lumen of the tubules predominates. During the post-moulting developmental period and at the beginning of bloodsucking, on the contrary, excrement discharge into the rectal sac predominates. (Author)
