RHIPICEPHALUS SANGUINEUS AND R. TURANICUS B. POM. TICKS IN NORTH CAUCASUS,

Abstract

According to literature and the author's data, the two closely related ixodid tick species Rhipicephalus sanguineus and R. turanicus are frequently confused since they have a different geographical distribution range, different medical and veterinary importance, and different climatic requirements. The author's data show that R. sanguineus requires positive mean monthly temperature of cold months, while for R. turanicus negative mean monthly temperatures of these months are characteristic. R. sanguineus has a characteristic host--the dog. R. turanicus usually parasitized various domestic and wild animals but its immature stages do not parasitize either of these animals. The author's investigations, however, showed that in Novosel'sk locality of Groznyy Oblast, for instance, this tick has also been found chiefly on dogs. In Groznyy, R. turanicus has been found in wall and floor cracks of dog kennels, which is usually characteristic of R. sanguineus. (Author)
