NEUTRON TOTAL CROSS SECTION MEASUREMENTS OF S AND FE NEAR 2 MEV,

Abstract

The neutron total cross sections of sulfur and iron were measasured from 1.8 to 2.6 MeV with energy resolution of a few keV. The cross sections of both elements show fluctuations with widths of the order of 10 keV. For sulfur, the properties of the fluctuations are in good agreement with predictions based on the statistical variations of the compound nuclear levels. For iron, the measured amplitudes are somewhat lower than the predictions. (Author)
