RESEARCH IN OPTICAL COHERENCE.

Abstract

Major accomplishments include the writing of a fundamental paper on optical system optimization and the development of a transcoherence theory for intensity (as well as for fields). An experimental program was initiated. An optical system was simulated by a computer. Arbitrary aperture size, shape, and amplitude and phase shading can be introduced into the computer, which generates the corresponding far-field pattern (i.e., image). The image may then be read out and/or photographed. The improvement achieved by transcoherence-function maximization can then be shown experimentally as well as theoretically. (Author)
