A COMPARISON BETWEEN SPATIAL AND ALPHABETIC ENCODING OF INFORMATION ON A VISUAL DISPLAY.
Abstract
An experimental investigation was made to compare the relative effectiveness of spatial and alphabetic encoding of information on a visual display. Results showed that simple or partial spatial encoding leads to good performance with respect to speed and accuracy. Where the primary need is rapid detection, the speed of response can be improved by even fairly complex spatial codes. The use of labels to identify the spatial code helps the display operator.
