TECHNOLOGY FEASIBILITY SPACECRAFT (TFS) TECHNOLOGY REPORT. VOLUME II. VEHICLE DESIGN AND FABRICATION.

Abstract

The purpose of the design and fabrication phase of the TFS Program was to create a full scale replica of a representative planetary lander vehicle. This vehicle replica was to be structurally similar and thermally identical to the reference lander configuration. The TFS vehicle would then be used for a series of thermal vacuum tests, as described in Volume III of this series. It was recognized that this program would provide a 'learn-by-doing' experience in the detail design and actual fabrication of such a large spacecraft. The emphasis was on the early acquisition of experience and problem area identification for future spacecraft programs, and on development of new manufacturing and QC techniques and processes.
