THE EFFECTS OF FAMILY RELATIONS AND SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF FEAR OF FAILURE MOTIVATION.

Abstract

One hundred and three Bucknell University males in an introductory psychology course were given a modified form of the Thematic Apperception Test, which was objectively scored for Hostile Press (Birney et al., 1964). A questionnaire was administered to obtain the S's scores on a number of family relations and socioeconomic variables. The coefficient of multiple correlation statistic (Guilford, 1956) was utilized to obtain significant relationships between HP and combinations of the following variables: family independence, lack of parental over-insistence on achievement, lack of parental severity of discipline, parents' sympathetic encouragement of achievement, father's occupation and father's education.
