REACTIONS OF H(+) IN H2 AND D(+) IN D2; MOBILITIES OF HYDROGEN AND ALKALI IONS IN H2 AND D2 GASES,

Abstract

The results of a study of the transport and reaction properties of low-energy ions in hydrogen and deuterium gases are presented. The measurements included mobilities of D(+) and D3(+) ions in deuterium gas, the mobilities of the alkali ions Li(+), Na(+), and K(+) in H2 and D2 gases, and the reaction rate coefficients for the three-body ion-molecule reactions H(+) + H2 + H2 to H3(+) + H2; and D(+) + D2 + D2 to D3(+) + D2. In addition, a few data were gathered for the radial, or lateral, diffusion coefficient of H3(+) ions in H2 gas in order to attempt to resolve a large discrepancy between the published results of two other laboratories.
