THE STABILITY OF THIN CLOSED CYLINDRICAL SHELLS MADE FROM FIBERGLAS (OB USTOICHIVOSTI TONIKIKH ZAMKNUTYKH TSILINDRICHESKIKH OBOLOCHEK),

Abstract

The paper deals with the behavior of thin orthotrophic shells, made of fiberglass by the winding method, under axial compression, neglecting the time factor. The problem of the stability of an elastic closed cylindrical shell is treated in the linear formulation. The formulas obtained are checked by experiments made on circular cylindrical shells having different fiberglas structures. The cylinders are found to fail by forming bulges or depressions. A formula is given for the critical stress in axial compression of thin orthotropic fiberglas shells in which the error does not exceed plus or minus 10% for R/h = 50--150. (Author)
