BASIC CONSTRUCTION PRINCIPLES OF THE RER-2 ANALOG-DIGITAL COMPUTER (OSNOVNYE PRINTSIPY POSTROENIYA ANALOG-TSIFROVOI VYCHISLITELNOI MASHINY RER-2),

Abstract

In 1962 the first RER analog-digital computer was manufactured and put into operation with the purpose of computing the economic conditions of the united energy system of the European USSR. All the operations of this machine were performed in analog form and parallel in time, which resulted in large quantities of equipment and reduction of reliability. During the construction of a machine for the energy system of Siberia the principle of series operation of elements was used to improve the reliability. In this type of machine, RER-2, for a repeatedly using the same analog element there were introduced memory elements and key circuits for switching. By using the principle of series operation the quantity of equipment decreases naturally but at the same time the time for the solution of the problem increases. To keep order in the performance of computing operations it is necessary to use a program determining this sequence. The program is a sequence of switching keys and it corresponds to the problem which is being solved by the machine. The program and the method for the solution of the problem are described. The characteristics of the machine RER-2 are given and its structural diagram is described. (Author)
