DETECTORS FOR ACTIVE SONAR.

Abstract

The optimum detector is derived from statistical decision theory for various assumptions on the target echo and the active-sonar background-noise process. Actual sonar data are used to investigate the assumptions that the background-noise process is gaussian and stationary, and to compare the performance characteristics of the noise-weighted linear correlator, the simple linear correlator, and the polarity-coincidence correlator.
