IDENTIFICATION OF IMAGES (OPOZNAVANIE IZOBRAZHENII),

Abstract

An introductory discussion of a machine's ability to identify images and respond to them in a manner similar to human behavior which is essentially a response to visual image identification. The need for such machine capability is evident when speed, accuracy, or volume of information is beyond human ability or when the information is located in places inaccessible to humans. Visual perception by a machine involves an infinity of manifestations. The machine must memorize every presented realization of a given class of objects and all other needed classes. The machine must memorize because it cannot learn to identify, but this requires an infinite memory which is impossible for a machine. Hence the field of the automaton is limited to identifying regularities of images. Constant images, such as letters, are easy for the machine to identify. However, the problem of moving images, such as human faces, is more complex. Solution of such a problem can lead to solving other problems not related to images, e.g., identifying sounds of speech.
