RESEARCH SHIPS OF OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM PROJECT NEPTUNE ATLANTIC

Abstract

This was the second phase of the Office of Naval Research 'Research Ship of Opportunity' project. Its objective was to test the feasibility of gathering plankton samples from a high speed merchantman (19 1/2 knots) and conduct biological experiments on living organisms at sea. Data for temperature profiles using expendable bathythermograph systems and concurrent navigational, oceanographic and meteorological information also were recorded.
