MOTION OF AN ION SWARM IN A CYLINDRICALLY SYMMETRIC DRIFT TUBE MASS SPECTROMETER.

Abstract

Experimental studies of the transport properties and reactions of thermal energy, mass-identified ions in gases may be made with a drift tube coupled to a mass spectrometer. A detailed kinetic theory analysis of the combined drift-diffusion-reaction behavior of the ions is required in order to extract information on drift velocities, diffusion coefficients, and reaction rates from the raw experimental data. Such an analysis is presented for a drift tube mass spectrometer with a cylindrical symmetry. (Author)
