IMPROVED ANALOG VOICE COMMUNICATIONS.

Abstract

In any peak-power limited, analog voice communications system, such as trunk telephone, air to ground radio, and point to point radiotelephone, the usual primary design criteria is to maximize the voice intelligibility, that is, the probability of correct reception of the voice message. For a given system configuration, it is possible to do this by means of an optimum frequency distribution of transmitter power through use of a transmitter filter. The criteria for optimization is maximum received voice information, or intelligibility. The engineering design and solutions of the transmitter filter are presented here, together with expected improvement under a variety of conditions. On the average the use of this filter is equivalent in communications effectiveness to doubling the transmitter power. (Author)
