ULTRASTRUCTURE OF MURINE PLASMA-CELL TUMOR YPC-1,

Abstract

The ultrastructure of YPC-1 tumor, a transplantable plasma-cell tumor of CAF-1 mice, is described. As do other well-differentiated murine plasma-cell tumors, YPC-1 tumor cells contain virus-like particles. They are intracysternal A particles observed to bud from the endoplasmic reticulum into cysternae. The particles with electron-lucent centers are surrounded by a concentric double membrane and measure an average 70 nm in outer diameter. Both the solid and ascitic form of the tumor contain virus-like particles with considerable variation in distribution from cell to cell. Occasionally particles were seen in the intercellular space. The virus-like particles free from the cells measure an average of 110 nm and may contain an electron-dense nucleoid, mature C particles or electron-lucent nucleoid, immature C particles. (Author)
