CHATTER BEHAVIOR OF HEAVY MACHINE TOOLS.

Abstract

A digital computer program for a more exact stability analysis of the cutting process has been developed. By this method six degrees of freedom, the coupling between the vibration modes and the complex cutting stiffness are taken into account. The results of a stability analysis for two vertical milling machines by means of this program are compared to experimentally determined values. Chatter tests on another milling machine showed the important influence of the machine position upon the critical depth of cut. On the computation section programs have been completed, by which the calculation efforts for generating the input data can considerably be reduced. In addition to this methods have been developed to calculate natural frequencies, mode shapes and response loci. (Author)
