CHATTER ANALYSIS OF MEDIUM-SIZE MACHINE TOOLS. VOLUME I. PRIMARY CHATTER OF LATHE TOOLS.

Abstract

The investigation was concerned with the stability of a lathe tool under orthogonal cut when the established mechanisms of chatter, the regenerative effect and mode coupling, were specifically excluded. Under the conditions of single pass cutting with the vibration response of the tool a single degree of freedom instability occurred as the uncut chip thickness was made to exceed some value termed the critical depth of cut. Measurements of the conditions for the onset of primary chatter were made with controlled variation of the direction of flexibility and damping capacity. Simultaneously the component of the total cutting force in the direction of flexibility was determined from the evaluation of the steady displacement of the tool from rest. These cutting force results were compared with published data and plotted in terms of the specific cutting energy and power functions of the depth of cut and cutting speed. (Author)
