NEUTRON CAPTURE GAMMA RAY SPECTROSCOPY.

Abstract

Theoretical curves of the gamma ray spectra have been obtained for five arbitrarily chosen metals - aluminum, copper, iron, nickel, and zinc. A 2 by 2 by 1/2 centimeter sample was considered. The neutron flux used was 10 to the 8th power neutrons per second radiated into 4 pi geometry. The crystal was a thallium-activated sodium iodide right cylindrical crystal, 4 in. diameter by 4 in. high. For comparison, a curve for a lithium-drifted germanium crystal was also obtained. In the NaI curves, both absorbed and scattered neutrons were considered. Background was neglected in both cases. (Author)
