DISEASE AS A FACTOR IN THE WORLD FOOD PROBLEM.
Abstract
The purpose of this presentation is to emphasize that estimates of food shortages must be based upon a broad concept of food requirements and distribution. Much of the observed malnutrition in the developing countries is secondary to the increased metabolic demands brought about by the disease processes. The growth and support of intestinal parasites and interference with absorption secondary to increased peristalsis from diarrhea leads to further nutritional deprivation and accentuation of malnutrition in the face of what might be adequate food.
