RELATIVISTIC AND ONE-PHOTON CORRECTIONS TO THE INTERACTION BETWEEN TWO ATOMIC SYSTEMS.
Abstract
The problem of photon exchange and relativistic corrections to atomic and molecular states has previously been treated quite extensively for individual atoms and molecules. The theory is now developed for including one-photon exchange effects and the leading relativistic corrections to low energy ion-ion scattering problems. The technique used is based on the Born-Oppenheimer approximation yielding an effective interatomic potential between the atoms. A projection operator technique is used to reduce the problem from the starting point of relativistic quantum electrodynamics to the final effective potential, which depends only on the interatomic coordinate and on the atomic spin operators. The asymptotic form for the potential is developed explicitly for the case of S-state atoms.
